NSW Metro Thunder 10 (Long 1’, 8’, 26’, 39’, Whalen 6’, Southwell 7’, 28’, Kalogrios 21’, 35’, Rocco Musumeci 30’) def. Football South Australia 1 (Mills 34’)
NSW Metro Thunder put on a masterclass to secure a 10-1 win over Football South Australia (SA) in the AWD Mixed Grand Final at the AIS on Friday afternoon.
Joshua Long opened the scoring for NSW in the first minute, playing a nice one-two with Brad Southwell before firing the ball across his body and into the bottom corner.
NSW keeper Nathan Whalen then brought the crowd to their feet, as he charged up the field and chipped his opposing keeper to give the Thunder a 2-0 lead.
Southwell then found the back of the net and Long added his second to put NSW up 4-0 inside 10 minutes.
SA were able to create some half chances throughout the first stanza, but couldn’t beat Whalen in goals, with NSW taking a 4-0 lead into the break.
Just as they’d done in the first half, NSW scored within 60 seconds of kick off, with Daniel Gravas tapping the ball to Dion Kalogrios who slotted the ball home from an acute angle.
Long then secured his hat-trick five minutes later, and Southwell netted the ball from the penalty spot to make it 7-0.
SA’s best chance came on the half-hour mark, as young Anthony Katianos-Nemes had his strong shot denied, before sending his follow-up shot just wide of the far post.
With time ticking away, SA finally hit the scoreboard when Sam Mills lobbed the keeper and essentially ran the ball into the net, sending the SA supporters into raptures.
But NSW were able to add a few more goals to their tally, with Long netting four for the match, to run out nine goal winners in front of a strong crowd.
