U17’s Girls – FNSW Lightning v Capital Football
It was quite the battle in the under 17’s grand final with the FNSW Lightning taking the honours after a dramatic penalty shootout.
Capital Football had the lead less than three minutes in as Alex Mckenzie scored on the break from a near impossible angle, smashing the ball into the top corner.
With only seconds remaining in the first half, Lightning captain Monique Holder had her side level with a powerful strike.
The tactical battle between the two sides continued in the second period with neither team able to break the other down.
The teams couldn’t be separated after the first 40 minutes, sending the game into an additional 10 minutes.
Stella De Marco almost had Capital in front at the beginning of the first period of extra time, only for Luisa Rochetto to make a great save.
The lightning were awarded a penalty and with the final kick of the half, Holder blasted her penalty into the back of the net.
Throwing everything forward, Capital went in search and found their equaliser. Again it was Alex Mckenzie who found the back of the net with her free kick in the dramatic closing stages.
Thus, the teams entered a penalty shoot to determine the champion.
Holder stepped up first and for the second time in the game, scored fro mthe spot. Ellen Brown then scored for Capital before Caitlin Orridge made it 2-1.
De Marco then missed her penalty, giving Abbey Lemon the opportunity to win it for Lightning, but she too missed.
Lucy D’Arcy needed to score to keep Capital alive but Rocchetto produced a fantastic save to win the championship for Lightning.
